At Aunt Emmi's, who was my German grandma, there were buttered rolls on her kitchen table with a dishwashing drawer. The buttered roll is an honest piece of German bread with genuine German brand butter. No margarine, mayo, or fancy remoulade. Just the greasy butter all on its own. A slice like that. Cut at least half a centimeter thick. That's it. No more, no less. That's how it was at Aunt Emmi's.
The visitor was instructed to cut a piece of butter and place it on the bread. Over time, the butter melted and spread across the table and carpet.
